There Was Magic in That Pillow

While feverishly ripping off the Christmas wrapping, the young granddaughter, had visions of a pink dollThere was magic in that pillowcar convertible, circled in the Sears Christmas catalog months earlier.  With wrapping paper scattered about, an unexpected gift was revealed, a pillow.  Not exactly what the young girl was hoping to receive.  She didn’t show disapproval, nor did she shout with glee.

This Christmas day was filled with home cooking, laughter with cousins and sledding on grandpa’s hilly farm land.   Too soon, the day was coming to a close and the families were preparing to return to their homes.  Gifts were packed into the car, including that pillow.

TEnchanted makeovershe young girl’s family made it home after a long car ride through the dark winter night. The pillow had made its way home to the young girl’s bedroom.  It was a patchwork of scrap fabrics left from other projects Grandma had completed.  This pillow now belonged to the young girl, there was no mistaking this, as Grandma had embroidered her name on it, so never to be separated from its new owner.

This pillow wasn’t pink or shiny, no wheels, radio or seats for girlfriends, but man did it travel.  It bore witness to many memorable slumber parties and more long car rides back to grandmas.

What the girl discovered as she grew was that Grandma had infused it with the magic that only love could provide.  All of grandma’s love and talents were infused as she cut, pinned, sewed and stuffed.  A subtle, quiet love that continues to bring peace to this now 41 year old “girl”.

Terry Grahl, President and of Enchanted Makeovers knows of this subtle, quiet love and she has infused it into shelters for women and children who are at risk.

Enchanted MakeoversOperating from the belief that our environment affects the way we feel about ourselves, how we see the world, and our place in it, I undertook a two year transformation of Grace Centers of Hope Women's Shelter, Pontiac, Michigan.  Armed with vision and belief that we can act to make our dreams reality, family, friends and community volunteers were recruited and organized to transform the shelter's bedrooms.  Donations of money and goods were solicited.  Professional contractors and decorators were invited to participate.   An extreme makeover replaced rooms of drab paneling, mismatched bedding and dreary, institutional colors, and in its place,  a bright, cheerful, caring space emerged, punctuated by positive affirmations and items meant to inspire faith, and belief in the power to make dreams a reality.   To emphasize the connection between transforming your environment and changing your life, a motivational speaker conducted a workshop to encourage the shelter's women to create their own vision of the future, how they would like to transform their own livesTerri Grahl into something beautiful.

Terry knows she can’t transform every shelter across the country but hopes to inspire people in every state to join the Traveling Sanctuary B*a*g (believe act go) Team.

The Traveling Sanctuary B*A*G is made from a pillow case that is cradled with love, laughter, tears, fears and dreams. It carries with it, the energy of a knowing hearts, a knowing that sometimes can only be found during a state of rest.

There's always a card attached on every bag with a message of hope:

"The personal note and small token provided inside is given in the hope that it will provide some restful peace and some fuel to help you face whatever you need to face, maybe just for today. The giver knows, as do you, deep down inside, that you are worthy of this gift."

Everyone who helps or becomes a team leader is featured on the web site along with their sewing photos, website and blog. Please feel free to call or email Terry with any questions. Directions along with a printable pattern are featured on the web site at www.enchantedmakeovers.org.

Projects have been featured in several national publications, blessed with many prestigious awards and even an appearance on the Oprah Show.
