Bug Hunting

If you purchase the tall button containers from a hobby store, these make perfect bug containers.  They have small "breathing" holes in the lid.  Or you can cover the top with pantyhose.

Have your kids fill the container with leaves, grass and bugs.  Check out a book from the library to learn more about backyard bugs and what they eat.

When I was a child, I once filled a shoe box with lots of caterpillars, sticks and the food that they eat.  I set it on my front porch that night.  The next morning I came to find that one of them had babies and there were tons of little baby caterpillars crawling in the box.  Imagine my delight in finding this fun part of nature.

To catch some ants:  soak a slice of bread in sugar water and cut into pieces.  Put the pieces around the yard.  The kids can watch and wait for the bugs to come get the "goodies!"

I recommend subscribing to a kid nature magazine.  Growing up, my grandmother would pay for a subscription for me to Ranger Rick Magazine.  I loved it!  I learned so much about nature through this magazine and it fascinated me!  I'm happy to see that it still is offered today!

There are many fun things for the kids to use and do while learning about nature.   Exploring will bring memories for them to cherish their entire lives.
