Home office

It can be hard to juggle your home life and work life, but when you work from home, the challenges can be more difficult. You can make life easier by having an organized home office. Here are seven easy ways to improve your organization and productivity.

Get the Essentials

The key to having a useful home office is to make sure you have the necessities to do your job efficiently. This generally includes having a computer, a desk, a chair, a filing cabinet, a printer, and any other tools you may need to do your job. Don't forget the little things like scissors, pens, and paper clips. Having everything you need readily accessible will save you valuable time.

Remove Distractions

To be productive when working, remove anything that will distract you. A home office is not a storage room. Remove all the toys, exercise equipment, and televisions from your office. Tell your family the hours you plan to work and ask them not to bother you during this time unless it is absolutely necessary. If you have a personal phone in your office, you may want to turn the ringer off.

Remove the Clutter

It is amazing how fast your desk can get overwhelmed with papers. Grab a trashcan and start getting rid of the junk. Go through your pens and throw out any that don't work; throw out any old papers that you do not need to keep and file others that need to be saved.

File Important Papers

A good filing system is a must for any office, but can make your productivity soar in a home office. When you know exactly where to look for something or put something, it will make your job much easier. There are many ways to create a filing system, use what works best for you. This may be a filing cabinet with hanging files for easy access or it may be something as imple as having different baskets to separate papers.

Keep a Calendar

Keeping a calendar in a highly visible location, like your desk or on your computer, will help you beat those deadlines and stay organized. Write the days and times you will work and what needs to be done to have a productive day at work. Keep your calendar free of personal commitments--this calendar is for work.

Clean out the Drawers

Keep your desk drawers free of junk and clutter. Drawers are valuable space in your office. Your desk drawers can very quickly become a disorganized mess. You can buy or make a tray to help keep your drawers neat and efficient.

Keep It Up

Putting everything away at the end of the day will help keep your home office organized with minimal effort. Once you have established that everything has a place, you just need to remember to put it in its place. Doing this will make going to work the following day easier and will also make you more productive.
