September 17th is Constitution Day, an anniversary for the date in 1787 when 39 men ratified the piece of paper that is a symbol for all American citizens. Even though this day is not as celebrated as other American holidays it is still important for all of us, especially children, to recognize why the Constitution is so important.
There are many fun ways that you can help your children study the constitution.
-
Explore the Words: The language in the Constitution can be daunting for younger children, so go through it together with index cards. On one side write the article number, and on the other side help your children paraphrase that article. This can open doors for great discussions with your children. Why is it important for a country to have a president? What are taxes, and why are they important?
-
Rules of the House: Have children write their own Constitution. What is important to their life? What “founding principles” should they use everday? Have them practice their best handwriting and copy it onto paper. You could even use a little brewed tea to help them “age” the paper afterwards.
-
A House as a Country: The United States Constitution covered all kinds of topics such as debt, taxes, rules and regulations. This is a good time to talk to kids not only about how government works but how a household works.
-
Make a Potato Stamp: In the days of the founding fathers many people used wax seals to seal documents closed and sign their names. Help children cut designs into potatoes and make a “stamp” with paint. Don’t want to waste a potato? Cut up sponges can make shapes as well!
-
Cooking for the Founding Fathers: For a Constitution Day snack, have children make a “founding fathers” staple of mush. Mush can be easily recreated with grits topped with some marmalade, molasses or maple syrup.
More than anything, have fun enjoying this day where we should all be so proud to be an American! Happy Constitution Day!
