Bedroom Decorating

Adding style and sophistication to your old tired bedroom is easily achieved in nine easy steps. The best part is it will not break your pocket book. With the addition of a few simple items and a fresh coat of paint, you can have a bedroom that looks as though it was fit for a King. To transform your bedroom, follow the nine simple steps below:

1. Sort and Organize This is a must. Carefully study your room. Grab some boxes and get rid of everything you no longer need, serves no purpose, or that will not fit the theme of the new room. The less cluttered the new room is the more comfortable the room will be.

2. The Bed The bed is the most important piece of furniture in the bedroom. We want the bed to be the center of the room, with everything else in the room complimenting the bed. Here a simple changing of the bedspread or comforter will make all the difference in the world. Choose colors that you enjoy and match the style of bedroom you want. Do you want a romantic room? Soft Sateen is a perfect choice of fabric here. Comfortable? Soft cottons are ideal here. An animal theme? Zebra bedding or other animal fabrics are the perfect choice.

3. Fresh Paint A fresh coat of paint to the room should be added to the walls to give the room a clean and fresh look. Choose colors that will compliment the bedspread or comforter and remember the following tips.

  • Limited Spaces: With small rooms it is very important to give the illusion of the room being larger. This is easily done by painting the room with lighter colors. This is also a great technique for rooms that do not receive a lot of natural light.
  • Narrow Spaces: For rooms that are a bit narrow, paint the back wall a dark color and use light hues on the side walls. This will help make the room feel a little wider.
  • Tall Ceilings: For rooms with tall ceilings, you can give the illusion of a lower ceiling by painting it a darker color. This will also give the room a more intimate feel.

4. Headboard The head board should make a statement as well and compliment the bed. If you have an existing headboard that you are unhappy with then repaint, refinish or upholster it. If your pocket book allows it, you may wish to consider purchasing a new one. Other ideas are to use paint or wallpaper on the wall behind the bed to give the appearance of a bedhead.

5. Floors No matter what flooring you have, it can be spruced up through the use of a rug. An appropriately chosen rug can add color and warmth to a room. As with ceilings, remember, the darker colored area rug will give the room a smaller appearance.

6. Windows Windows are very important in the room and should be accented with beautiful drapery, valances or blinds. Valances add a touch of romance and elegance, however, it is necessary to include a drape or blind as well, as they will not provide privacy. When choosing the drapes, choose colors that accentuate the walls.

7. Light Fixtures Lighting and attractive fixtures in the room are everything. It is important to have adequate lighting and fixtures that you can adjust, this is especially important for fixtures around the bed. Choose fixtures that will fit the theme of your room. Whether brass or silver or ceramic there are many beautiful fixtures out that will be the perfect match. Consider lamps or wall fixture for next to the bed and a lamp for the dresser.

8. Accents Adding accents to the room will help to pull the room together. Consider pillow shams that match the bedding. Survey the room and choose nice accent pieces for your bedside tables and your dresser. Accent items can be anything that you enjoy, add color and make the room interesting with a variety of shapes and sizes.

9. Hardware Do not overlook the hardware in the room. With simply changing the knobs and door handles you can have an entire new look to the room. There is a wide selection on the market and you will find many different styles to choose from.
